International Workshop on

Smoothness, Approximation, and Function Spaces

October 10-16, 2010, in Oppurg/Thür. (Germany)

Second Announcement

The Research Group "Function spaces" in the Mathematical Institute of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena organises a workshop on "Smoothness, Approximation, and Function Spaces" in Oppurg in Thuringia.

It is our intention to concentrate on various aspects on problems of smoothness, approximation and the theory of function spaces which are relevant in applications to solutions of differential equations and for computational aspects. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • generalised smoothness, function spaces, and approximation
  • trigonometric approximation, smoothness quantities
  • approximation quantities (s-numbers, widths, entropy numbers)
  • processing of smooth and oscillatory data
  • computational aspects (sampling, numerical integration, discrepancy, stochastic algorithms)
  • approximative solution of differential equations
The conference is an essential part of the German-Ukrainian research project "Smoothness from the point of view of theory of function spaces (classes) and approximation". It is mainly funded by the DFG (436 UKR 113/103/0-1). We give some further information.

You can have a look at the corresponding abstracts via

    http://safs2010.uni-jena.de/safs-t.html

We ask all participants (who have not yet done this) to send us titles & abstracts of their talks by July 15, 2010, at latest. There will also be an opportunity for ad hoc -seminars.

The lecture room will be equipped with two overhead projector, a data projector + laptop, and a small board.

  2. Lecture Notes
Instead of (usual, printed) Proceedings we plan to offer all speakers of this workshop the possibility to send us their material, slides etc. afterwards (preferably in pdf). Alternatively also a (closely linked) paper would be welcome.
We collect all this material (or links to your personal web pages) and "publish" it on a special web page of this workshop such that participants can download the files. You may contact us if you have any question.
  3. Registration
You will receive a separate Email within the next days where we ask you to confirm and complete your details for the registration. As soon as you reply to this email to us

    safs2010@uni-jena.de

your registration becomes binding and we shall reserve the accommodation according to your wishes then. You should reply to this confirmation message by

    July 15, 2010

    at latest.
  4. Venue
The Conference will take place in the CJD Schloss Oppurg in Oppurg/Thür. situated in a beautiful countryside about 50 km south of Jena. The small town was founded around 1074 and belonged to several Thuringian principalities in its long history.

Our workshop is arranged in the baroque castle "Schloss Oppurg" built between 1708 and 1714. This palace was preceded by a moated castle from the 11th century. A picturesque remainder from this time -- an old tower covered with vine branch -- can still be found near the castle.

Originally the building had exactly 365 windows, 52 doors, 12 chimneys and 4 entrances, therefore it was also well-known as "Four Seasons Castle". It is surrounded by a lovely small park designed in English country style. For a long time the castle was used as summer residence and hunting lodge, followed by a frequent change of owners and purposes in the recent past. Now it is run by the CJD ("Christliches Jugenddorfwerk Deutschlands" ~ "Christian Association of Youth Villages") and used as European Centre of Education, hosting workshops, schools and small conferences all over the year.

  5. Costs & Payment
The accommodation is arranged at the hotel in single and double rooms with full board (buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner). The price is 90 € per night and person in a single room and 75 € per night and person in a double room. The conference fee is 90 €, if paid before July 31, 2010, and 100 € after July 31, 2010. It must be paid by bank transfer only, where bank charges have to be assumed by the registrant.
After doing the bank transfer, please send us an email (to safs2010@uni-jena.de) or a fax (to +49 3641 9-46102), with a copy of the bank remittance slip. The details of the conference account are :
